Although many believe that butt enhancement is only performed on certain celebrities on social media, butt augmentation is gaining in popularity all over the world. It is popular among celebrities as well as the general public. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has been keeping statistics on the procedure and here are some of their numbers from the last few years.
The “Year of the Booty”
According to social media, 2014 was considered the “year of the booty”. Whether it was butt implants or butt lifts, there was an 84% increase in butt enhancement surgeries from the previous year. If you are thinking about lifting your butt or getting a bigger butt, you are certainly not alone!
Every 30 Minutes a Booty Gets Boosted
While buttock augmentation did not make the list of the top five most popular procedures according to the ASPS in 2015, statistics did show this cosmetic procedure was growing at the fastest rate. It was estimated that, within every 30-minute period, there was some sort of butt surgery performed in the United States. In fact, the statistics showed a 36% increase from 2014. What was behind the increased number of buttock enhancement surgeries?
The “Booty Boom”
The years 2014 to 2016 have been called the “booty boom” thanks to celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj and their amazing backsides. There’s also the rise of Instagram stars such as Jen Selter and her “belfies” or butt selfies. Jen lunged and squatted her way into the hearts of 3.4 million followers while proudly emphasizing her posterior. With all the curves hitting the celebrity spotlight, people are following the trend of getting their butts in bigger and better shape.
BBL Leads the Way
The Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and butt implants are the only FDA-approved methods for butt augmentation. Although implants have been around longer, statistics show implants are taking a back seat to the Brazilian butt lift. In 2015, BBL procedures made up nearly 15,000 of the butt augmentations performed. Implants were about 2500 of the enhancements and traditional butt lift totaled nearly 4800 procedures. Why is BBL so popular? It offers many benefits including smaller incisions resulting in less noticeable scarring and no surgical manipulation of the gluteal muscle. In addition, a BBL removes unwanted fat via liposuction from other parts of the body for reinjection into the buttocks. In essence, the patient is getting the benefits from two cosmetic procedures at once.
